Nephrology is a medical specialty that focuses on kidney health. The kidneys remove waste from the blood, maintain the body’s electrolyte balance and release hormones. A nephrologist is trained in internal medicine and will understand not only how the kidneys function, but also how their dysfunction affects other parts of the body.

Conditions a nephrologist would treat include:

  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney cancer
  • Protein or blood in the urine
  • Kidney stones
  • Renal artery stenosis

A nephrologist may be involved in a patient’s care when the kidneys are affected by:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Autoimmune diseases

Physicians may assess kidney function with an imaging test or a urine or blood sample.
